The Role Model Database
is a computerized list of Iowa women working in science, engineering
and technological fields. This database is administered by the
Program for Women in Science and Engineering at Iowa State University
and was established in 1987 as a resource for educators and educational
agencies in Iowa. The database contains over 600 women with expertise
in areas like: accounting, actuarial science, agricultural sciences,
animal science, architecture, astronomy, bacteriology, biology,
botany, chemistry, computer science/engineering, conservation/recreation,
dentistry, economics, engineering, entomology, fisheries and wildlife,
food technology, horticulture, mathematics, medicine, microbiology,
pharmacy, soil/water conservation, statistics, veterinary medicine,
zoology and many others.
Despite considerable progress, women are still under-represented
in science, engineering, and technology fields. Role Model visits
by professional women working in the field are one of the most
successful ways of captivating interest and establishing credibility
for nontraditional careers. Students need to know that women can
and do make significant contributions in scientific fields.
