What happen on April 16th? In 1912, Harriet Quimby became the first woman pilot to cross the English Channel. Can you believe it?? There is only 3 ½ weeks left of the school year! Congratulations to the seniors celebrating Senior Week!! I’m sure many of you are busy finishing up homework and starting to prepare for finals, but don’t forget that there are a lot of great activities going on at Iowa State and through PWSE! Tomorrow is Taking the Road Less Traveled Career Conference in Memorial Union, and we will have hundreds of middle school women visiting Iowa State and learning about what scientists and engineers do! We will also have a career conference next Thursday, April 24th. We are in need of a few more volunteers for that conference. Shifts are from 8:00am to 10:00am and 10:00am to 12:00pm. If you are interested in volunteering tomorrow, please contact me at pwsegrd2@iastate.edu as soon as possible. We are also still looking for an undergraduate student to serve as our Student Role Model Coordinator for the 2008-2009 school year. eWiSE is an electronic newsletter brought to you weekly by the Program for Women in Science and Engineering (PWSE). It is our hope to connect all female students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields to a variety of exciting and educational opportunities throughout the year! Each week, we include a list of job and volunteer opportunities in order to keep you informed about possible co-ops, research experiences, internships, and volunteer activities, both on and off campus. We also include information about our academic group tutoring hours as well as the schedule for academic workshops brought to you by Academic Intervention and the Academic Success Center. Last, we include a calendar of events that include activities through PWSE and the learning community, the WiSE student organization, Society of Women Engineers, and other University organizations, offices, and departments. And, when available, scholarship information about PWSE and other scholarships. It’s a great way to stay informed about what opportunities and activities there are on campus as well as through our office.

-----JOB/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES----- PWSE STUDENT ROLE MODEL COORDINATOR Overall coordination of role models -Arranging RM recruitment, selection, training -Corresponding with teachers and role models for visit arrangements, primarily over email -Completing paperwork for visit summaries, payroll, other tracking issues -Communicating regularly with PWSE Outreach Coordinator -Purchasing supplies for activities
The tasks required by this position typically take 10-15 hours a week, with regularly scheduled office hours conducted between 8AM and 4PM on weekdays.
Attention to detail, dependability, and the ability to interact professionally are essential. The rate of pay is $7.50-8.50 per hour.
Required qualifications: -Eligibility to drive university vehicles upon application -Willingness to use CyRide or own vehicle for buying supplies for the program -Enrollment as an ISU student in science/math education, science, technology, engineering or math-related major -Strong organizational skills -Available for commitment to at least one full academic year
Preferred qualifications: -Experience as a student role model -Experience with K-12 programming

Scope: Summer Interns are responsible for providing a fun, safe and educationally effective learning environment in a science day camp setting. Interns are responsible for developing weekly camp curriculum with exciting, hands-on activities around such topics as Amusement Parks, Robots, Chemistry, and Animals. Interns are also responsible for providing on-going, daily supervision for campers.
Responsibilities - Develop and implement activity- based curriculum to facilitate skills-based learning on a variety of science themes and concepts - Present and facilitate hands-on activities in a classroom setting with up to 18 children per class - Develop and implement behavior management skills in the classroom - Coordinate field trips and guest speakers - Responsible for extended child care before and after camp - Ability to obtain a chauffer license
Skills: - Enthusiastic, energetic - Comfortable with public speaking - Posses excellent communication skills - Organized self-starter; ability to work with little supervision
Requirements: - High School Diploma - College course work in Education or Science related fields - General knowledge of or interest in science - Previous experience working with youth
Working Hours: The employment period for a Science Center of Iowa 2008 summer intern includes two weeks of orientation, ten weeks of camp, and three days to wrap-up/ clean up after camps. This will take place May 19- August 8th
Interns receive a $2500 stipend and six hours of college credit in curriculum development through Graceland University (credits are transferable.)

SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERGRADUATES AT MONTANT STATE UNIVERSITY – BOZEMAN Montana State University is inviting applications from undergraduate students in all fields of engineering as well as biology, environmental and earth sciences, and related fields to participate in a unique interdisciplinary summer research program. The Safe Passages REU site will research the complex issue of simultaneously providing for safe passage of humans, wildlife, and aquatic organisms through rural transportation corridors. The REU program will center around three interdisciplinary topic areas: 1) Water and Fish Passage, 2) Habitat Connectivity and Wildlife Movement, and 3) Public Safety and Mobility. A 90 mile stretch of US Highway 191 new MSU, which follows pristine mountain waterways and traverses part of Yellowstone National Park, will provide an ideal field site for students to pursue nationally replicable solutions to these issues. In addition to there project involvement, the students’ REU experience will be enriches by research seminars, training workshops, and similar education activities over the course of the 10 week program Program Dates: June 2 – August 8, 2008 Location: Bozeman, Montana Stipend: $4500 (plus an additional weekly food stipend) Travel: Travel reimbursement up to $900 for travel costs to MSU Housing: Program covers all on-campus housing expenses for participants Application Deadline: April 20, 2008

WISE SECOND YEAR SUCCESS SEMINAR The Wise Sophomore Success Year Women in STEM learning community will provide special programming for female undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines during their sophomore year. A one-credit seminar led by PWSE staff and peer mentors will provide opportunities for professional development, connections with professionals to reaffirm career decisions, continued career exploration, and development of leadership skills. The program will also provide networking and social interactions among sophomore women in STEM fields. Open to all sophomores in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students may register for University Studies U ST 201X (a 1-credit seminar course) offered Tuesdays from 3:10 – 4:00. She will cover topics such as building a cash reserve, looking for a company with a retirement plan, investment basics (stocks, bonds, vesting, asset allocation, etc.), and difficulties women face in funding retirement. WISE LEARNING COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB PRESENTS THE KITE RUNNER (the movie!!) AGRICULTURE WEEKEND EXPERIENCE The College of Agriculture and Life Science is full of opportunities and tools designed specifically towards making the college experience both beneficial and fun. Take advantage of the different opportunities at Iowa State as well as those in the community and professional worlds. Along those lines, the College would like to invite students to experience life on a farm for a weekend. The Agriculture Weekend Experience (AWE) program is designed for students who have little or no farming background, and would like to spend a weekend living on a working farm in Iowa. Participating in this program includes staying with a host family from a Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, being involved with the family’s daily responsibilities involving crops and livestock, and getting a tasted of their local communities.
If you fit the bill for the kind of student we’re looking for, or you know someone who does, please consider taking part in on of the offered weekends of AWE: April 25-27 June 20-22 July 11-13 Participating in the AWE program is free to students and includes free transportation, lodging, and meals. Applications for the April weekend are due Friday, March 28th (THIS FRIDAY) at 4:00pm. Applications for June and July are both due the Monday after spring semester finals, Monday, May 12th at 4:00pm.
