Undergraduate women in
science and engineering can be a part of a PWSE Mentoring experience
in several different ways. The goal of all these mentoring options
is to develop supportive relationships for women engineering and science
students.
Peer Mentoring
Students participating in the WiSE
Learning Communities have the opportunity to meet regularly with
an upper-class student who serves as a peer
mentor. In addition to meeting with the students one-on-one, the
peer mentors also assist in coordinating group activities for the
learning communities.
Mentoring by Professionals
The Program for Women in Science and Engineering in partnership with
the College of Engineering participates in MentorNet, an international
electronic mentoring program. Through MentorNet, students are matched
with professionals and communicate with these mentors on a regular
basis using e-mail. For information about this program, check out
the MentorNet website.
Mentoring
through Student Organizations
Two student organizations that focus on serving women in engineering
and science are the Society
of Women Engineers and Women
in Science and Engineering. Both of these organizations have mentoring
type programs: WISE Big-Sis/Little Sis and SWE Buddy Programs.
Mentoring to Others
Undergraduate science and engineering students can also serve as mentors
to pre-college students. There are opportunities to serve as an “e-mail
mentor” to a high school student (GirLinks),
host a high school student for a weekend visit (WiSE
Getaway), or visit students in schools to do hands-on science
(Student Role Model Program).
