Becoming a PWSE Student Role Model

PWSE STUDENT ROLE MODEL - The Program for Women in Science and Engineering (PWSE) is looking for energetic science and engineering students to serve as student role models!

The job of a role model is to visit schools and community organizations across the state of Iowa and lead K-12 students in fun, interactive science and math activities.  As a role model you will be expected to present a variety of hands-on-activities with other role models at schools and career conferences around Iowa, and to encourage women and additional under-represented populations to pursue careers within traditionally male-dominated fields, like science and engineering.

Role Models must be students who are in a science, technological, engineering, or mathematical field of study. Students must also be able to drive a university vehicle. And, of course, you will need to be energetic about science!

There are many reasons that this job is optimal for college students:

    • No strict schedule. You will be emailed when there is a request for a role model and be given time to reply to the request. If there is a date and time that fits your schedule and you are one of the first role models to notify me of your availability, then you will be granted the visit. There is no commitment to the number of hours you are required to work.
    • Great pay!  Role models earn $10/hour for every visit with a $30 minimum. Pay time includes prep time, travel time, and presentation time.
    • You don’t need a car. We can rent an ISU vehicle to transport role models to the schools.
    • Great for resumes!
    • You will obtain public speaking experience and leadership skills that will help you in the future while influencing younger students to pursue their goals.

If interested, YOU must apply by FRIDAY, JANUARY  31ST! Complete applications must include application form and driving authorization. Please return applications to  Mary Jordison , 218 Carver Hall. At that time, you will also need to sign up for an interview date and time; sign-up sheet is on the door of 210-1 Carver Hall (adjacent to PWSE office entrance).

If you have questions contact the Student Role Model Assistant, Rachel Butterworth, by email:  rolemodels@iastate.edu or by phone: 515-294-5814 or contact Carol Heaverlo, by email heaverlo@iastate.edu or by phone 515-294-5883
