Ada Hayden Scholarships
This scholarship programis named for Dr. Ada Hayden, member of the Iowa State College of Botany faculty, 1920 - 1950. Dr. Hayden received her Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1918 -- the fourth person to receive this ISU degree and the first woman. Hayden was appointed Assistant Professor of Botany in 1920. She received The Iowa Conservation Hall of Fame Award from the Iowa Chapter of the Wildlife Society in 1967. Hayden was curator of the Iowa State Herbarium from 1934 until her death in 1950. In January of 1988 the Iowa State herbarium was renamed the Ada Hayden Herbarium in honor of Dr. Hayden.
The Charles T. Wright Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the memory of Charles T. Wright, Jr., a computer engineering faculty member who was an active mentor to students, including regularly serving as a PWSE Summer Intern mentor. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage women to enter and remain in a science or engineering field. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1000.Students must be admitted to Iowa State University to be eligible.
The scholarship is awarded to female students majoring in mathematics, physical or computer sciences, or engineering. It is awarded in the spring for a student's upcoming sophomore or junior year. This scholarship is awarded for an academic year.
Current undergraduate students or transfer students may apply for this scholarship.
The selection committee shall give special consideration to students who have challenging personal circumstances, including but not limited to:

being raised in a single-parent home
-
currently raising children.

being the first child of the family or extended family to attend college
-
deemed to have significant potential but needs some encouragement to pursue science or engineering as a career and to become more involved in classes and research with fellow students and faculty (e.g,. a student who may be considered shy and will benefit from the recognition of this award).

having to work one or more jobs while attending ISU and/or having to take a loan out in order to pay for all or a significant portion of their tuition, fees, books, living expenses and other associated costs of attending ISU
The Laurel Ann Crowe Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the memory of Laurel Ann Crowe who received her B.S. in Computer Engineering from Iowa State University in 1984. Laurel, a sales engineer, was also an avid equestrian. She died at the age of 37 from breast cancer. This scholarship recognizes a female student in engineering who has achieved excellence. The award is open to full-time undergraduate students. The scholarship is renewable provided the student maintains a 2.0 grade point average and remains a full-time undergraduate student in engineering.

2010-11 Scholarship Application
Open to Iowa State or transfer students who will be classified as sophomores or juniors during the upcoming academic (2010-11) year, are in science, technology, or math curricula, ( STEM ) and have a minimum GPA of 2.8. note different criteria above on on scholarship forms for the indvidual Wright and/or Crowe Scholarships). (Note: If you will be entering the upcoming academic year with more than 66 earned semester hours, you must submit a statement verifying your requirement to complete at least two more years in your current undergraduate major.) The Ada Hayden Scholars Program will work to connect undergraduate women in STEM majors with each other and professional women as well as provide a leadership experience. The program will create a team of women in STEM fields who will
- Meet as a group (monthly) for professional development and social programs
- Develop and execute a group service learning project
Selected scholars will receive a $1000 scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year for their participation in the program. Recipients will be chosen based on GPA, work experiences (campus and previous internships), leadership experiences, involvement in activities, and an essay. Multiple scholarships are awarded.
While demonstration of financial need is not required, a personal statement of financial need may be considered as one criterion if the applicant wishes to include such information in her application. The application deadline for these scholarships is February 1st each year.
