Why did you choose Iowa State University?
I actually went to Truman State (in MO.) my freshman year. But then I transferred to Iowa State University after I decided to major in Dietetics. I came to ISU my sophomore year, because ISU has great programs in the food science areas. I also liked that ISU has a large campus, but still has a small town feel.
What activities have you been involved with at Iowa State University?
I've done about everything that the Program for Women in Science and Engineering offers. I was in the WISE Learning Community for transfer students. I've been a peer mentor for that community, a summer research intern, and a student role model. Through PWSE, I also had the opportunity to attend a week long faculty development program called Wakonese; where I was one of 12 undergraduate students who helped to lead sessions for faculty members from across the country. I've also been part of the Honors program, honor societies, the Nutrition Club, and a Cyclone Aide (helping students during orientation). Outside of campus, I have also been involved in the community. I served as an assistant track coach at Ames High school my senior year at ISU. Working with these young women was a great experience!
What is your advice to incoming transfer students?
Get involved! Iowa State University and the Program for Women in Science and Engineering have a lot to offer. In addition to great academic programs, ISU has lots of opportunities for students to be involved outside of the classroom. Some transfer students I know missed out on things by not getting involved outside the classroom. The college experience is so much more than just going to classes. Take advantage of opportunities outside of the classroom to really learn about yourself.
